Cabinet Reshuffle Sparks Conflict at PKS, Golkar and PPP

Theindonesiatoday.com - The new cabinet lineup installed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono this morning has sparked internal rifts in at least three political parties of the ruling coalition.

Musholi, one member of PKS expert council, said that the dismissal of Suharna Surapranata from his position as research and technology minister was mainly due to out-of-control political maneuvers committed by PKS lawmakers led by Anis Matta (PKS secretary general) and Fahri Hamzah (PKS deputy secretary general).

"It's sad that the minister is replaced because of out-of-control attitudes of PKS lawmakers," Musholi is quoted by Detik.com this morning.

PKS reportedly splits into two blocks. One block wants to stay in SBY’s cabinet, while the other block urges the party to exit altogether from the ruling coalition. Mahfudz Siddiq, other deputy secretary general of PKS, said his party has yet to make decision about this issue. The decision will be made next month.

An internal conflict is also seen in Golkar related to the replacement of Fadel Muhammad (deputy chairman of Golkar) as minister of fisheries and marine affairs by Sharif Cicip Sutardjo, another deputy chairman.

Fadel complained about the decision. Cicip, meanwhile, asks Fadel to stay with Golkar despite the reshuffle. "Fadel did asked the rationale of the replacement. I think that's just normal and fair. But I think Fadel would remain loyal to the party," Cicip said.

How about PPP? Well, there was an incident yesterday related to the replacement of PPP politician Suharso Monoarfa by property businessman Djan Faridz. Tuesday afternoon, some people at PPP informed media that SBY dropped Djan Faridz and that PPP wanted its own cadre instead. "I'm afraid, someone pushed the party to name Djan Faridz," one source commented.

Djan Faridz is not an official member of PPP. The party, however, nominated Faridz as governor of Jakarta in 2012 election. This morning, however, SBY installed Faridz as minister of public housing and will likely drop his bid for Jakarta governor. ( haryanto@theindonesiatoday.com)
