Operators Respond with Chorus of Denials on Phone Credit Theft

Theindonesiatoday.com - Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) estimates telecommunication consumers suffered monthly losses of Rp147 billion due to phone credit theft.

Telecommunication operators, meanwhile, denied their involvement in the scheme. Tifatul Sembiring, minister of information and communication, said earlier that he would punish operators which deduct phone credit through short text messages (SMS) offering prizes and premium content.

On Wednesday, representatives of telecom operators came to the office of the Ministry of ICT, to clarify the allegation.

According to Indonesian Mobile and Online Content Provider Association (IMOCA), the revenues from the premium service reached 5% of the transaction value of telecommunications, which was Rp100 trillion in 2010.

Indosat, the second largest cellular operator, dismissed the allegation saying it has anticipated this problem by providing notification to customers about how to deregister from premium services. Indosat also provides a mechanism for reconfirmation of services accessible via WAP, SMS, or UMB.

XL Axiata, meanwhile, claimed that it provides complaint post for its customers, who are victims of phone credit theft via SMS to number 588. While Telkomsel, in organizing the content service, claimed full control over the content providers by way of random testing. ( teguh@theindonesiatoday.com)
